Funky Friday Enrichment Programme ...

In line with our whole school vision and in preparation for the new curriculum for Wales , we continue to offer a programme of exciting enrichment experiences that will enable our pupils to become:

  • ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives.

  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work.

  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the wider world.

  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

Funky Friday Groups are cancelled Friday 4th October and will resume the week after. The planned four sessions will still be completed by half term. Thank you

Our enrichment programme takes place on a Friday afternoon, for 4 weeks each half term for pupils from Y3 to Y6, starting Friday 27th September.  Friday afternoons take on a totally different feel across the school and the children bubble with excitement and anticipation.  Children meet in mixed age groups and have the opportunity to take part in cross-curricular learning experiences that broaden and enrich their learning on a rolling program throughout the year.  They work collaboratively with their peers of different ages whilst developing their own personal skills.  Staff closely monitor and track pupils' individual literacy and numeracy skills alongside cross-curricular development.

Pupils will rotate round the following 6 groups each half term: Posture Yoga and mindfulness, STEM, Music Mayhem, Master Chefs, Wilderness Warriors and International Languages through Sport. More information on each group will follow.

Posture Yoga and mindfulness

During 2018-2019, Year 4 and Year 5 children took part in a Yoga project with Sara Harramore from Moment of Calm, a yoga teacher who specialises in children’s yoga. This programme went through postures, breathing and self-reflection. We found nearly all children benefited from the moment of calm on a Friday afternoon, with particular benefits for those learners who have difficulties regulating their emotions. These positive comments were also mirrored by parents.

As a result of our very positive experience and in keeping with Successful Futures’ importance on Health and Well-being, we felt it important to continue our provision this year. As part of our Funky Friday Enrichment provision, we will be running a ‘Posture Yoga and Mindfulness’ programme for four weeks. During these sessions our intentions will be to improve children’s flexibility, strength, coordination and body awareness. We will use postures and breathing to help improve concentration, a sense of calmness and relaxation. The actions and words of these sessions will not be contrary to the Christian ethos of the school and we feel this will enhance children’s ability to be still, thoughtful and reflective.

Masterchefs

We are very excited to offer a cookery programme where pupils will learn the importance of seasonal cooking. The children will have the opportunity to learn where, when and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed. They will have the chance to sample some autumn food and design a balanced seasonal meal. Pupils will learn how to cook with seasonal ingredients following their own recipes and using a wide range of preparation and cooking techniques. We will be teaching children appropriate hygiene rules for handling mat and fish and safe preparation skills.

Wilderness Warriors

This is a favourite activity with the children! During this course, pupils will develop a range of skills in a fun and exciting way. They will be completing team building activities as well as cooking on an open fire. They will be den building using a variety of natural materials and making natural shelters for themselves and small animals. As we expect to have a lot of rain during our sessions, we will be learning water filtration and how to make water safe to drink. We take advantage of our environment by making craft activities using natural materials we can find around us.

The Olympians

Teaching languages through the medium of sport has been proven to be a fun and engaging way for children to use and improve their language skills. Over the four weeks of Funky Friday the children will play games, complete team building exercises and practise different sporting skills whilst using a range of vocabulary, such as numbers, colours and instructions, in French, German, Spanish, Italian and Welsh! We will also explore sports and games that children from different countries around the world play in their PE lessons, and have a go at playing them ourselves!
